2021 Acura TLX: A Great Sedan

Turbo engines

Transmission

Both engines are associated with a 10-speed automatic transmission, with specific programming for the high-performance variant. The SH-AWD all-wheel drive system is optional for the 2.0-liter engine and standard for the V6.

Introducing the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach E

The all-electric 2021 Ford Mustang Mach E is the first addition to the Mustang line-up in more than 50 years. More than that, however, it marks Ford’s first full-blooded foray into the brave new world of all-electric vehicles. Prices range from $43,895 to well north of $60,000. However, it’s well worth noting that Mach E buyers are eligible for the full $7,500 federal tax credit. Even better, in some US states the total rebate could amount to as much as $10,000.

In another departure from tradition, the newest Mustang, in addition to being all-electric, isn’t so much a sports car as a 5 seater SUV. This more family-friendly Mustang will be available in 5 separate variants; Select, Premium, First Edition, California Route 1, and, of course, GT.

Battery Options, Range, & Charging

When it comes to batteries, there are 2 options. You can either opt for the extended-range 98.8 kWh battery pack or the standard-range 75.7 kWh version. The larger battery pack if teamed with rear-wheel drive promises a range in excess of 300 miles. For all-wheel-drive models, however, the range falls away slightly to around 270 miles. Meanwhile, the equivalent range-figures for the 75.7 kWh battery pack are estimated at 230 miles and 210 miles respectively.

The Mach E is offered with Ford’s patented Connected Charging System. The system’s improved charging efficacy does, however, come with a catch. To fully capitalize on the system’s accelerated charging rates of up to 32 miles of range per hour, you’ll first need to install a 240-volt outlet. That said, even with a standard 120-volt outlet, the system is still capable of adding 30 miles of range across the duration of a night’s charging.

Out on the road, Ford has partnered with Electrify America to provide Mach E owners with access to an unrivalled network of 12,500 public charging stations. Superfast DC charging can restore battery life from 10% to 80% in as little as 38 minutes. Moreover, to take some of the stress out of re-charging, the Mach E’s navigation system is designed to highlight the best places to fill up on electricity.

Introducing the 2021 Honda Pilot

The all-singing, all-dancing 2021 Honda Pilot brings a glut of new updates to the table. As standard, the latest Pilot off the assembly line offers an eye-catching array of upgrades including 9-speed automatic transmission, dual-zone climate control, and paddle shifters. On top of that, you’ll be pleased to know that a slew of other improvements has been introduced across the breadth of the Pilot’s trim line. Engine and Fuel Economy

The latest Pilot boasts a tweaked V6 engine which is capable of producing a highway-gobbling 280 horsepower as well as an impressive 262 lb-ft of torque.

In terms of fuel economy, the 4 wheel drive version will achieve 20mpg under city-driving conditions and 27mpg out on the highway. Meanwhile, the all-wheel-drive edition fairs only marginally worse, achieving figures of 19mpg and 26mpg respectively.

All Wheel Drive

One major advance is that the 2021 Honda Pilot now offers the option of all-wheel drive. And not any old all-wheel drive at that. Oh no. You see, what the 2021 Pilot actually offers is Honda’s painstakingly engineered all-wheel-drive system, which distributes engine torque between the vehicle’s axles using a hydraulically-actuated rear differential.

Okay, enough with the science, how does all that translate to the road? Well, Honda claims that their all-wheel-drive system improves handling in all conditions. On top of that, the all-wheel-drive system also has the benefit of boosting the Pilot’s maximum tow rating from a more than respectable 3,500 pounds to a whopping 5,000.

Tech Features

One of the drawbacks of a 3-row SUV is that accessing the back row can all too often degenerate into something of an unedifying clamber. Not so with the new Pilot, however. You see, Honda has come up with a bespoke solution which allows the 2nd-row seats to shift electronically. What’s more, operating the helpful mechanism is no more taxing than pushing a button.

Hybrid Cars: A Brief History – How They Work – Advantages

The Toyota Prius Hybrid, introduced in Japan in 1997, was the first mass-produced hybrid car.  Honda’s Insight Hybrid came out in the United States and Japan in 1999.

A hybrid car is an automobile that combines an internal combustion engine and electric propulsion drive train.  Most hybrids employ a conventional 4-cylinder gasoline engine and electric generator.  This combination is a more efficient system in delivering power to the drive wheels.  The electric motor is superior at supplying torque,  that is, getting the car moving quickly.  The gasoline engine is best suited for maintaining the car’s momentum at higher speeds.  The combination of the two propulsion systems yields better fuel economy and cleaner emissions.  This “hybrid” system “switches” the two motors at optimum speeds to maximize fuel efficiency and performance.

Initially, hybrid cars were not that popular because they were priced considerably higher than conventional gasoline-powered cars and production capability was limited.  Toyota and Honda had very few factories dedicated to producing hybrids.

I sold the Toyota Prius between 2000 and 2007 and the typical buyer was a high-income customer who liked the idea of using less gas and expelling lower emissions.  The Prius was usually three to six thousand dollars more than comparably equipped, 4- cylinder gasoline Toyota Corollas.

But, the hybrid cars gained popularity as gasoline prices went up and down.  The hybrid cars became more comfortable to drive and came better equipped;  The idea of much better fuel mileage “caught on” in the eyes of the consumer.  The hybrid batteries are more compact in size and more powerful and, prices have moderated in that they are more “inline”  with non-hybrid cars.

Today, every manufacturer, including Toyota, Honda, Ford, GM, Fiat/Chrysler, Hyundai, Kia, Mazda and all the luxury brands offer sophisticated hybrid models.

An example of the efficiency of a hybrid automobile vs. a conventional 4-cylinder gasoline equipped car:

    • Hwy: 36 mpg
    • Overall 32 mpg
  • A 2018 Toyota Prius (base model)

(F) Their pricing is more “in-line” with conventional powered cars.

Observations On Current Auto Exterior Design

Is it just me or have the auto designers gotten together and compared notes regarding auto exterior design?  Have you noticed that many of the major brands have incorporated similar design “cues”?

Design Cue 1:  Sculpted Side Body Panels

Upon close examination, you will notice that every auto brand – as of 2018 – has sculpted side body panels (doors).  Here is an example:

Design Cue 2:  Front End Styling

Lexus and Toyota emphasize the “radical” or “far out” front end design.  The 2018 Toyota Camry and Avalon have blacked-out front grills in the shape of a large “shark’s mouth”, giving the car a “mean”, almost menacing effect.  The 2018 Ford Focus, 2019 Hyundai Veloster, 2018 and 2019 Audi A6, 2018 and 2019 Audi A4, 2019 Chevrolet Cruz, and 2018/2019 Honda Accord are a few of the many models that tout this popular styling trend.

Design Cue 3:  Front Grill Design

The three and/or four section front grill is also an often used styling cue as seen on cars such as the 2018/2019 Honda Civic and 2018/2019 Hyundai Elantra and Sonata to name a few examples.  Another popular front-end styling trend is the “tapered” front headlights as seen on Nissan, Lexus, Toyota, Ford, Mazda, and numerous other brands.

Design Cue 4:  Sleeker Automobiles

Over the years cars have become sleeker and more aerodynamic in large part due to the federal government’s stringent fuel economy specifications.  Sloping hoods sharply angled front windshields, and sculpted body panels are a by-product of the government’s higher fuel economy standards.

Design Cue 5:  Elimination of the “Separate” Chrome Bumpers

Starting in the late 1970s and early 80s we have witnessed the elimination of the attached front and rear chrome bumpers.  Instead, auto designers have integrated bumpers so that they are “hidden” by smooth and curvaceous facades.  In doing so, safety has not been sacrificed as manufacturers have adhered to the federal government’s increased front and rear impact standards for slow speed impacts.

Design Cue 6:  Lowering of Vehicle Height

The lowering of overall height is another contributing factor to the overall sleekness of exterior auto design.  This lower body profile not only contributes to the current model’s sleeker appearance but also is a big factor in new car improved fuel economy because of lower co-efficient of drag.

Design Cue 7:  Aluminum Alloy Wheels

Aluminum alloy wheels are more attractive and more durable then the outdated plastic hub caps or wheel covers from years ago.

Design Cue 8:  Rear End Styling

Integrated rear-lipped spoilers have taken the place of “stand above” spoilers in many models.

Design Cue 9:  Dual Exhaust Ports

Many new cars come standard with dual exhaust and some have 4 exhaust outlets.  Exhaust pipes have been incorporated into the lower bumper area, which has been “blackened out”.
